Stefan Brüggemann is an artist who covered a vast variety of mediums, occasionally amalgamating sculpting, painting, drawing, and videography/editing into one work. His pieces often contained and deployed text, as his focus narrowed in on questioning, discussing, and debating language. Ironically, there was conflict within his stylistic choices. He opted for a combination of
Minimalism as well as
Conceptualism which contradicted each other. Because of this, he stood out against the majority of artists practicing rejecting commercialism during the 60s and 70s. Instead of the desire to dematerialize art, Stefan Brüggermann's pieces were simple and aesthetically refined. Underlying many of his works was a punk attitude. Along with the importance of language, word choice was cleverly and provocatively selected to bring attention to pertinent issues in a bold new way. His mediums carried out a theme of focusing on cultural, gender, and social appropriation, as well as pinpointing the possible value displacement in his viewers. (
