And Then... (Yellow)

Takashi Murakami's White Reverse DOB, 2006, offset print featuring Mr. DOB’s rotated face with large blue eyes and a wide smile.

Offset lithograph printed in colors on smooth wove paper - Co-published by the artist and Kaikai Kiki Co., Ltd, Tokyo // White Reverse DOB by Takashi Murakami, created in 2006, is an offset lithograph that features Murakami's iconic character Mr. DOB in a playful and bold composition. The artwork presents Mr. DOB’s face in an exaggerated, rotated position, filling the square frame with oversized, expressive features. The character’s large blue and yellow eyes and wide, black grin contrast against a light checkered background, embodying Murakami’s Superflat aesthetic that combines pop culture, manga influences, and a flat, two-dimensional style. This piece is vibrant and whimsical, capturing both innocence and a hint of surrealism in Mr. DOB's expression. The print, measuring 51 x 51 cm, is part of a limited edition of 300, co-published by the artist and Kaikai Kiki Co., Ltd., Tokyo, and showcases Murakami’s ability to blend fine art with popular visual motifs.

What is pop-art?

Pop Art is an art movement that began in Britain in 1955 and in the late 1950s in the U.S. It challenged traditional fine arts by incorporating imagery from popular culture, such as news, advertising, and comic books. Pop Art often isolates and recontextualizes materials, combining them with unrelated elements. The movement is more about the attitudes and ideas that inspired it than the specific art itself. Pop Art is seen as a reaction against the dominant ideas of Abstract Expressionism, bringing everyday consumer culture into the realm of fine art.
