Aquatint and embossing // Tom Wesselmann’s Monica Nude with Purple Robe, created in 1990, is a limited edition print combining aquatint and embossing techniques, measuring 38 by 59 inches. The artwork depicts a reclining female nude with minimal yet expressive black lines that define the contours of the figure. The subject, draped loosely in a patterned robe, exudes a sense of relaxed sensuality. Wesselmann’s signature style, characterized by clean lines and an economy of detail, highlights the form of the figure while leaving much of the space open, creating a striking contrast between the bold outlines and the white background. The use of embossing adds a subtle texture, enhancing the tactile quality of the piece and giving the robe a more three-dimensional effect. This work exemplifies Wesselmann’s exploration of the female form in an elegant and minimalist manner.

What is pop-art?
Pop Art is an art movement that began in Britain in 1955 and in the late 1950s in the U.S. It challenged traditional fine arts by incorporating imagery from popular culture, such as news, advertising, and comic books. Pop Art often isolates and recontextualizes materials, combining them with unrelated elements. The movement is more about the attitudes and ideas that inspired it than the specific art itself. Pop Art is seen as a reaction against the dominant ideas of Abstract Expressionism, bringing everyday consumer culture into the realm of fine art.
