// Wifredo Lam’s 'Jean Cassou' is a 1975 lithograph that encapsulates the artist’s unique fusion of Afro-Cuban culture, European modernism, and surrealism. The artwork features a central, abstracted figure that combines human and animal elements, rendered in textured black lines on a warm, ochre background. The figure appears to be both mechanical and organic, with geometric shapes, horns, and what resemble rib-like structures. Lam’s exploration of identity, mythology, and ritual is evident in this mysterious and symbolic composition. The earthy tones and primitive forms evoke a sense of ancestral power and spiritual significance, characteristic of Lam’s work.

What is Surrealism?
Surrealism began in the 1920s as an art and literary movement with the goal of revealing the unconscious mind and unleashing the imagination by exploring unusual and dream-like imagery. Influenced by Sigmund Freud’s theories of psychoanalysis, Surrealist artists and writers sought to bring the unconscious into rational life, blurring the lines between reality and dreams. The movement aimed to challenge conventional perceptions and express the irrational aspects of the human experience.
