Yaacov Agam Infinity Transparency #3 sculpture with sliding colored acrylic plates in a wooden frame on a turning base.

Sliding colored acrylic plates on a turning foot. // Yaacov Agam’s Infinity Transparency #3 (2017) is a dynamic sculpture that exemplifies the artist’s pioneering contributions to kinetic and optical art. The piece features a sequence of sliding colored acrylic plates set within a rectangular wooden frame on a turning foot. Each plate is a different vibrant hue—ranging from deep black to bright yellow, blue, and red—allowing for endless reconfigurations as the viewer interacts with it. The interplay of color, light, and movement creates a constantly shifting visual experience, embodying Agam’s philosophy of art as a dynamic, participatory process. What is kinetic art?

Kinetic art is an international movement that emerged in the 1920s and gained prominence in the 1960s, referring to art that involves both apparent and real motion. It encompasses any medium that includes movement, either relying on actual motion for its effect or being perceived as moving by the viewer. Early examples include canvas paintings designed to create optical illusions of movement. Today, kinetic art often refers to three-dimensional figures and sculptures, such as those operated by machines or those that move naturally. The movement covers a variety of styles and techniques that frequently overlap.
