Lithograph printed in colours - Signed, numbered and dated on the front - Printed by IDEM, Paris. Published by Beijing Commune, Beijing. // Zhang Xiaogang’s Big Family No.2 continues the exploration of family dynamics and collective memory within Chinese society, part of his renowned Bloodline series. This lithograph features a grayscale portrait of two solemn parents, depicted with traditional Chinese features and attire, accompanied by a child in the center. The child, painted in bright pink and red tones, is the focal point, standing out against the muted background. The use of fine red lines connecting the family members symbolizes the invisible, yet powerful, bonds of heritage and familial obligation. Zhang's meticulous rendering of these familial relationships, paired with the symbolic color palette, suggests themes of identity, generational trauma, and the political weight carried through Chinese history. Signed, numbered, and dated on the front, this lithograph was printed by IDEM in Paris and published by Beijing Commune.

What is Surrealism?
Surrealism began in the 1920s as an art and literary movement with the goal of revealing the unconscious mind and unleashing the imagination by exploring unusual and dream-like imagery. Influenced by Sigmund Freud’s theories of psychoanalysis, Surrealist artists and writers sought to bring the unconscious into rational life, blurring the lines between reality and dreams. The movement aimed to challenge conventional perceptions and express the irrational aspects of the human experience.
