Harold Ancart is a contemporary Belgian painter and sculptor who explores the rigidity that manifests in varying regions of emptiness where a work is exhibited in a desginated area. Ancart’s artwork is a cross between abstraction and figuration. In his art, Ancart primarily uses found objects, drawings, and paintings.

« Without a horizon line, one gets lost and eventually dies »
Harold Ancart
Some of Ancart's art practice involves the use of a variety of mediums such as: ink, charcoal powder, soot, paint, and burned remnants left behind by a burning fire. When working with sculptures, he employees concrete, epoxy resin, steel sculptures, burnt found photographs, and abstract paintings.

« I remember that a tall redhead guy with glasses named Mr. Antoine gave me gouache to paint with Since then I never really stopped. »
Harold Ancart

Ancart’s more recent works of art depicts free-form abstractions of flowers and landscapes to produce a surreal/ science fiction visual representation. Ancart was born in 1980 in Brussels, Belgium and went on to earn his M.F.A in 2007 from The École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Visuels de La Cambre in Belgium. Currently, Harold Ancart lives and works in New York City and Brussels.

What is minimalism?

What is minimalism?

Minimalism is a style in music and visual arts characterized by pared-down designs and simplicity. It began in Western art after World War II, gaining prominence particularly in American visual arts. Minimalism draws heavily on aspects of modernism and is often viewed as a reaction against Abstract Expressionism, as well as a precursor to post-minimal art practices. Prominent minimalist artists include Agnes Martin, Donald Judd, Robert Morris, Frank Stella, and Dan Flavin.
