Claes Oldenburg (Zweden/VS, 1929–2022) was een baanbrekende beeldhouwer, bekend om monumentale kunst in de openbare ruimte en zachte sculpturen. Zijn speelse werken transformeerden alledaagse objecten tot gigantische iconen, waarmee hij de grenzen van de Pop Art verlegde. Samen met Coosje van Bruggen realiseerde hij grootschalige projecten wereldwijd, waaronder Spoonbridge and Cherry in Minneapolis.

Claes Oldenburg, bekend van zijn grootschalige, openbare installaties, is een veelzijdige kunstenaar met werken die naast performance, tekenen en schrijven voornamelijk sculptuur omvatten. Zijn sculpturen verbeelden vaak alledaagse consumentenartikelen, zoals zichtbaar in werken als Lipstick (Ascending) On Caterpillar Tracks en Screw Arch. Vaak gekoppeld aan de bewegingen van conceptuele kunst en popart, werd Oldenburg aanvankelijk geïnspireerd door de theatrale aspecten van de gebeurtenissen onder leiding van collega-kunstenaars Jim Dine en Allan Kaprow. Hun werk bood een verfrissend alternatief voor het dominante abstracte expressionisme toentertijd en beïnvloedde zijn eigen inval in performancekunst, waardoor zijn interesse later naar sculptuur werd geleid; eerst op zachte wijze, voordat het meer substantieel en grootschaliger wordt. Gedurende zijn hele carrière heeft Oldenburg gewerkt met tal van materialen zoals glasvezel, jute, krantenpapier, kippengaas en met gips doordrenkt canvas. (Artist website)
