Kleurpotloden bestaan uit een kern gemaakt van verschillende gekleurde pigmenten gemengd met een bindmiddel, omhuld door hout. Ze zijn ook verkrijgbaar als vaste pigmentstiften zonder houten omhulsel. Bij het tekenen wordt het pigment op een oppervlak overgebracht, waardoor lijnen en schaduw in verschillende diktes mogelijk zijn.

Natuurlijke hars komt van boomsap, terwijl synthetische hars een soort dicht, gemakkelijk vormbaar plastic is.
