Two Paintings (1984) de Roy Lichtenstein est une œuvre imprimée complexe mêlant gravure sur bois, lithographie, sérigraphie et collage. Composée de deux sections distinctes, elle oppose des formes géométriques abstraites en haut à un portrait stylisé en bas, encadré de manière caricaturale. Le portrait inférieur, exécuté avec les points Ben-Day et les contours épais caractéristiques de Lichtenstein, parodie le cubisme sous un angle Pop Art. La partie supérieure évoque l’abstraction moderniste, créant un dialogue visuel entre styles artistiques. Tirée à 60 exemplaires sur papier Arches 88, cette œuvre illustre la manière dont Lichtenstein revisite l’histoire de l’art à travers les codes du graphisme et de l’impression.

Roy Lichtenstein (États-Unis, 1923–1997) était une figure majeure du mouvement Pop Art, célèbre pour ses peintures inspirées des bandes dessinées qui parodiaient la culture populaire. Ses œuvres, telles que 'Whaam!' et 'Drowning Girl,' utilisaient des couleurs vives et des points Ben-Day pour imiter les techniques d'impression commerciale, remettant en question les frontières traditionnelles de l'art.

Fortement influencé par l'esthétique de la publicité et de la bande dessinée, Roy Lichtenstein était une figure reconnue du mouvement Pop Art dont l'œuvre faisait souvent référence et parodiait simultanément des icônes de la culture pop comme Mickey Mouse - Look Mickey est l'une des œuvres les plus remarquables de l'artiste. Lichtenstein est reconnu pour sa signature Ben-Day dots, une technique utilisée dans les bandes dessinées pour désigner le dégradé et la texture ; Oh, Jeff...I Love You, Too...But... est une représentation ironique de l'adversité temporaire que l'on trouve souvent dans les bandes dessinées romantiques et n'est qu'une des nombreuses œuvres à adopter cette technique - l'œuvre est composée d'huile et de magna sur toile, et comme pour beaucoup de ses œuvres, le titre est repris dans la bulle de discours représentée dans le tableau. Lichtenstein a également été reconnu pour ses reproductions dans le style Pop Art de chefs-d'œuvre d'artistes tels que Van Gogh, Cézanne et Mondrian - l'artiste modernisera certains aspects des originaux, comme l'illustre sa reconstitution de La chambre de Van Gogh à Arles.
