Ruscha, Ed | Here and Now, 2009 — available on Composition Gallery
3-color lithograph on Kohler HMP paper; Signed, numbered, and dated on recto. Printed and published by Gemini G.E.L.
Ed Ruscha’s Here and Now is a 2009 three-color lithograph on Kohler HMP paper that turns language into image. The words HERE / AND / NOW appear in large red capitals, interrupted by soft blue spray-like bands, while the surrounding frame is labeled with the cardinal directions. Printed and published by Gemini G.E.L. in an edition of 75 plus 20 artist’s proofs, the work reflects Ruscha’s long-standing interest in words as both visual form and cultural signal. Its mix of precision and atmospheric blur gives the phrase a double meaning: immediate and present, yet slightly unstable, as if place and time are always shifting.

What is pop-art?

What is pop-art?

Pop Art is an art movement that began in Britain in 1955 and in the late 1950s in the U.S. It challenged traditional fine arts by incorporating imagery from popular culture, such as news, advertising, and comic books. Pop Art often isolates and recontextualizes materials, combining them with unrelated elements. The movement is more about the attitudes and ideas that inspired it than the specific art itself. Pop Art is seen as a reaction against the dominant ideas of Abstract Expressionism, bringing everyday consumer culture into the realm of fine art.
