Fortement influencé par l'esthétique de la publicité et de la bande dessinée, Roy Lichtenstein était une figure reconnue du mouvement Pop Art dont l'œuvre faisait souvent référence et parodiait simultanément des icônes de la culture pop comme Mickey Mouse - Look Mickey est l'une des œuvres les plus remarquables de l'artiste. Lichtenstein est reconnu pour sa signature Ben-Day dots, une technique utilisée dans les bandes dessinées pour désigner le dégradé et la texture ; Oh, Jeff...I Love You, Too...But... est une représentation ironique de l'adversité temporaire que l'on trouve souvent dans les bandes dessinées romantiques et n'est qu'une des nombreuses œuvres à adopter cette technique - l'œuvre est composée d'huile et de magna sur toile, et comme pour beaucoup de ses œuvres, le titre est repris dans la bulle de discours représentée dans le tableau. Lichtenstein a également été reconnu pour ses reproductions dans le style Pop Art de chefs-d'œuvre d'artistes tels que Van Gogh, Cézanne et Mondrian - l'artiste modernisera certains aspects des originaux, comme l'illustre sa reconstitution de La chambre de Van Gogh à Arles. Lettrisme est l'orthographe française du nom du mouvement, dérivé du mot français pour lettre.
