Lanzarote 51 van Miquel Barceló, gemaakt in 2002, is een ets en aquatint in beperkte oplage die de intensiteit van een stierengevechtsscene vastlegt. In dit werk is de matador verwikkeld in een directe confrontatie met de stier, waarbij hun lichamen bijna samensmelten door dynamische, gebarenachtige streken. De ronde arena, gesuggereerd door de gebogen lijnen op de achtergrond, omhult de figuren en benadrukt de beperkte ruimte van het dramatische gevecht. Barceló's expressieve gebruik van textuur en lijnvoering versterkt de spanning, terwijl het contrast tussen licht en donker diepte toevoegt aan de compositie. De wervelende beweging rond de centrale figuren roept zowel de fysieke beweging van het gevecht als de emotionele onrust van het moment op.

Wat is abstract expressionisme?

Abstract Expressionisme is een kunststroming die in de Verenigde Staten ontstond in de jaren 40 en 50. Gekenmerkt door grote, abstracte doeken, legde de beweging de nadruk op spontane, expressieve penseelstreken en het gebruik van kleur en vorm om emotie over te brengen in plaats van de werkelijkheid te representeren. Kunstenaars als Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko en Willem de Kooning zijn belangrijke figuren binnen deze stroming. Abstract Expressionisme markeerde een verschuiving in de kunstwereld, waarbij New York City een centrum van de internationale kunstscene werd.
