Motherwell, Robert | Untitled 5 from The Basque Suite, 1970-71 — available on Composition Gallery
Screenprint in colors on J.B. Green paper. Initialed in pencil and numbered. Published by Marlborough Graphics Inc., New York, and printed by Kelpra Studio, London, bearing the artist’s blindstamp. Literature: Engberg/Banach 79-88. Image: 56.5 × 43.5 cm (22 1/4 × 17 1/8 in). Sheet: 103.5 × 71.8 cm (40 3/4 × 28 1/4 in).
Untitled 5 channels the political heart of The Basque Suite through its charged palette. Two heavy black diagonal forms converge at the apex against a ground divided between deep green above and a red band below, a chromatic arrangement that evokes the Basque national colours. Splatter and gestural debris erupt in the triangular gap between the black masses, refusing compositional closure. The meeting of green, red, and black carries an unmistakable political resonance, extending Motherwell's lifelong engagement with the Spanish Civil War into the Basque struggle for self-determination. Printed on J.B.

Robert Motherwell (USA, 1915–1991) was a leading figure in Abstract Expressionism, celebrated for his bold use of black and white and his 'Elegy to the Spanish Republic' series. Combining gestural abstraction with intellectual depth, his work often explored themes of history, philosophy, and poetry. Motherwell’s contributions helped define post-war American art.

What is Process Art?

What is Process Art?

Process Art is an artistic movement and creative approach where the focus is on the act of creation rather than the final product. The term process in this context refers to the various stages of art-making, including gathering, sorting, associating, and organizing materials and actions. This movement emphasizes the artistic journey and the human expression involved in creating art, rather than the finished piece itself. Process Art is driven by inherent motivation, intentionality, and the rationale behind the actions, viewing the creative process as the true artwork.
