André Komatsu was born in 1978 and is a Brazilian artist who lives in Sao Paulo. Komatsu's architectural installments normally show objects that don't complement each other. He likes to position something that takes out the functionality of the main object. His work often features a concrete or brick wall which symbolizes society's stagnation and the roadblocks that continue to affect social imbalances and injustice. One of Komatsu's most popular displays is called 'Febre De Ouro' which is a series of fenced rooms made with galvanized steel. The fenced rooms continue to get smaller and smaller as you walk through them, and they continue on until you can't fit. The installation is disturbing and gives the feeling of suffocation or claustrophobia, even though the viewer can see through the outside of the fence. Komatsu is part of the 'Invisible Movement' and focuses on how people deal with established powers and space in urban areas. He work shows how we have territorial limits in the world.

What is conceptual art?

Sometimes referred to as Conceptualism, this is an art form where the idea(s) or concept(s) behind the work take precedence over material concerns and traditional aesthetics. Many conceptual artworks can be created by anyone simply by following written instructions. The concept or idea is the most essential aspect of the artwork.
