Angela Bulloch is a multi-faceted, pattern-focussed artist with work spanning across several different media forms – painting, sculpture, video, audio and installation. Bulloch's earliest works included an innovative, minimalist ‘Drawing Machines‘ concept, in which a machine is set up to draw lines along the wall of the gallery in response to external stimulus – this could include the noise of visitors within the gallery, or the smallest sounds of visitors sitting and standing at the benches situated around the work. Asides from this engagement with sound, Bulloch is also recognized for her ‘pixel boxes’, a series of compilations primarily made up of beech wood, aluminium or copper, fronted with a soft plastic and presented with a multitude of changing colours and patterns – Aluminium 4 is one of her most notable works of this vein, for which she created an algorithm whereby 16 million different colour permutations are possible.
