Jonathan Meese

Jonathan Meese (Germany, 1970) is a provocative contemporary artist known for his multidisciplinary approach, blending painting, sculpture, and performance. His works often critique politics, culture, and power structures through chaotic, expressive imagery. Meese’s bold style and theatrical persona have made him a polarizing yet influential figure in the international art scene.

Becoming mature is not important for art.
- Jonathan Meese
Renowned for his anarchic installations, performances and paintings, Jonathan Meese’s work is, by his own account, a reaction to the ‘dictatorship of art’ - focusing on themes of identity, power and revolution, Meese often portrays his own likeness and explains “I exhume to consume”. Many of Meese’s exhibitions are of a multi-media nature; HOT EARL GREEN SAUSAGE TEA BARBIE (FIRST FLUSH) is one of his most acclaimed exhibitions and features a chaotic blend of paintings and prints, grotesque and hellish depictions of human figures cast in bronze, magazine photo collages and large-scale installations that result in an overwhelming socio-political commentary. (Artist website)

What is conceptual art?Artwork by John Baldessari

What is conceptual art?

Sometimes referred to as Conceptualism, this is an art form where the idea(s) or concept(s) behind the work take precedence over material concerns and traditional aesthetics. Many conceptual artworks can be created by anyone simply by following written instructions. The concept or idea is the most essential aspect of the artwork.
