I see my practice as picture making. Whatever is available, I use.
- Wolfgang Tillmans
Wolfgang Tillmans is a fine-art photographer based in Germany. Initially, he was known for the portraits he would take of his friends that resembled casual snapshots, and those images cemented his reputation as an observer of movement in contemporary society. Wolfgang Tillmans became recognized as the historian of the gay and club scenes in London during his early adulthood. His exhibitions feature seemingly arbitrary arrangements in which photographs are either taped or pinned to the walls of the gallery, rather than hung in frames. Inkjet prints, postcards, color photographs and magazine clipping with Tillmans' images are all placed on the walls, spanning almost from the floor to the ceiling. He broadened out from portraiture to sky photographs, aerial shots, landscapes and astrophotography, frequently motivated by political and aesthetic concerns, particularly those of gender identity and homosexuality. His work generally comes in three different sizes, ranging from small to quite large. He moved into digital photography in 2009 and has embraced what he terms the differences in psychology of photography with the digital medium rather than film. (Artist website)
