Frank Stella was an American painter and printmaker, known for his mark in Minimalism and Post-painterly abstraction. Frank Stella began earning recognition in 1959 for his series of black striped paintings that changed the face of Abstract Expressionism. He went on to master increasingly complicated work that followed a steady progression. Frank Stella has created large-scale sculptures - freestanding and architectural - as well as other difficult works. Frank Stella ‘s experimentation has made him a primary artist in American modernism, and assisting in developing major forms of art including color field painting. Frank Stella was an early user of non-representational work, rather than work using meaning, human emotions, or words. Stella works on principals of line, plane, volume, and point, as well as focusing on the basic elements of color, shape, and composition. He moved from Aluminum Paintings (1960) for which he is noted for creating his own geometrically shaped canvases. During the late seventies, Frank Stella began exploring printmaking which has been pursued throughout his amazing career.

The term can also describe two distinct but related trends in post-World War II modernist painting.
