A performance artist and photographer, Liu Bolin is renowned for his use of disguise and chameleon-like methods as a means of immersing himself within his environment; Bolin’s Hiding in the City series sees him camouflaged by paint in a silent protest against the Chinese government and the ostracisation he felt – such techniques as disguise and camouflage have earned him the nickname ‘The Invisible Man’. The process of painting his body can take up to 10 hours – with the help of assistants, Bolin uses paint to match with a portion of his chosen environment; his chosen sites have included the rubble left by earthquakes in the Chinese countryside, and the words of the Communist Manifesto scribed onto a wall.
