Roger Raveel (Belgium, 1921–2013) was a painter whose work evolved from abstract to figurative, often depicting everyday objects. A central theme in his art was the opposition of fiction and reality. Notably, he created a large wall painting in the Brussels metro station Mérode in 1976.

Roger Raveel’s work is commonly associated with the Pop Art movement, and his style evolved throughout his career, encompassing both abstract and figurative art. Raveel’s work was renowned for blurring the lines between reality and fiction - a lot of the objects that he drew upon for his paintings were every-day objects that you could expect to see, but he would merge subjects such as cyclists, birds and shapes: the level of the abstractions within his painting would vary with each output. Raveel was heavily influenced by fellow artist, James Ensor; one of his most famous works, titled Memory of My Mother’s Deathbed, drew comparisons to Ensor’s own similarly titled work – My Dead Mother.

What is pop-art?

Pop Art is an art movement that began in Britain in 1955 and in the late 1950s in the U.S. It challenged traditional fine arts by incorporating imagery from popular culture, such as news, advertising, and comic books. Pop Art often isolates and recontextualizes materials, combining them with unrelated elements. The movement is more about the attitudes and ideas that inspired it than the specific art itself. Pop Art is seen as a reaction against the dominant ideas of Abstract Expressionism, bringing everyday consumer culture into the realm of fine art.
