Being an artist is a huge privilege.
- Abdulnasser Gharem
A former Lieutenant Colonel in the Saudi Army, Abdulnasser Gharem draws on his military experience to create art that portrays a combination of authority and rule, alongside a social commentary on current affairs and cultural traditions. Gharem’s artistic outputs span a variety of forms, including photography, sculpture and performance. His performances often involve him using a social setting, such as a street, as the canvas for his performance – he then enlists the local community to collaborate, adding further authenticity to the everyday life he is trying to depict – Sirat (The Path) is one of his most popular works of this kind. Gharem has also founded the non-profit organization, Edge of Arabia, as a means of providing an art education and a platform for his fellow Saudi artists – a purpose he is particularly driven to fulfil. (Artist website)

What is conceptual art?Artwork by John Baldessari

What is conceptual art?

Sometimes referred to as Conceptualism, this is an art form where the idea(s) or concept(s) behind the work take precedence over material concerns and traditional aesthetics. Many conceptual artworks can be created by anyone simply by following written instructions. The concept or idea is the most essential aspect of the artwork.
