Berndnaut Smilde

Acclaimed for his work across installation, sculpture and photography, Berndnaut Smilde is a visual artist whose works often incorporate scientific principles – his Nimbus series is arguably his most notable work and consists of artificial clouds, created by Smilde himself; visible for only a matter of seconds, and created across a number of sites including cathedrals and castles, the clouds represent a long-standing theme present throughout the artist’s work: transience. Smilde also emphasises the notion of duality throughout his work and has stated that his Nimbus series was designed with the aim of posing two possibilities, stating “you could see the cloud as a sign of misfortune. You could also read it as an element out of the Dutch landscape paintings in a physical form.” (Artist website)
