Thread is like a mirror of my feelings.

Chiharu Shiota
Chiharu Shiota (b. 1972 Japan) is a Berlin-based installation artist known for her immersive environments woven from thread, memory, and emotion. Trained in painting and performance, Shiota shifted toward large-scale installations that use red, black, or white yarn to trace invisible connections between people, objects, and inner states. Everyday items like keys, dresses, or empty beds often appear in her work, acting as vessels of human presence and absence. Themes of identity, transience, and the body’s relationship to space are central to her practice. Influenced by artists such as Marina Abramovicand her own experience living between cultures, Shiota creates poetic spaces that invite viewers into a shared contemplation of existence. Her work bridges sculpture, drawing, and performance, echoing both Japanese aesthetic traditions and Western conceptualism.
