Painting is a coalescing of experience.
- Richard Phillips
Richard Phillips is a New York-based artist known for hyper-realistic paintings featuring close up portraits in the style of magazine spreads and celebrity shots. Specifically, his works are reminiscent of women's fashion magazine images from the 1950, '60s and '70s using bold colors to create striking large-scale pictures. His intimate nature of portraitures explore themes such as identity, sexuality, the marketing of the visual form, politics and desire. Basing many of his works on found imagery, Phillips' work has a distinctly photographic feel which focuses on the relentless gaze used in both the media and art. The subject, style and iconic nature of Richard Phillips' oeuvre places him firmly within the pop art genre, with his works being featured in television shows such asGossip Girland featured in MAC cosmetics campaigns. His work has been exhibited around the world since the early 2000s. Richard Phillips who traditionally worked in drawing and painting on canvas, has moved onto experiment with photography and film in recent years. He released his first film called Lindsay Lohan at the 2011 Venice Biennale. He described the short as a 'motion portrait' of the actress, capturing her emotional vulnerability and unique beauty.
