Painting is a combination of carpentry and catastrophe.
- Terry Winters
Terry Winters is a painter and printmaker whose art has progressed to envelop styles including minimalism, abstraction and modernism. Winters’ earliest works were heavily influenced by the minimalistic outputs of Brice Marden, but he eventually evolved into a style that was focussed on both organic shapes and often abstract images of botanicals and other natural mediums; Winters is also renowned for his interest and analysis of scientific processes and mathematics-based patterns – evidenced in works such as his Clocks and Clouds series. Throughout the course of his career, Winter’s work has gradually become more complex, but the fundamental collection and subsequent collation of images, as a means of reference, has always been a basis on which he has created – the collages that he puts together are steady preparation for his artistic endeavour; Winters likens this to a ‘readymade‘ that he aims to eventually perfect. (Artist website)

What is abstract art?

Abstract art uses form, shape, line, and color to create a visual experience without attempting to represent external reality. The composition exists independently of the world's visual references, focusing on expressing ideas and emotions through non-representational means.
