Le Miracle du Feu, 1986

Known for his monumental, abstract installations, Eduardo Chillida was a highly celebrated Basque artist, whose works are on display in parks, public squares and museums across the world. Chillida’s works were primarily comprised of steel, wood and iron and often reflected his fascination with the relationship between materiality and space; The Comb of the Wind is one of his most popular sculptures and combines geometric forms and linked shapes to create an imposing force for the viewer – he has commented: “the sculptures are very large and my work is a rebellion against gravity... a dialectic exists between the empty and full space”. Chillida initially studied architecture before combining this experience with art and focusing on light, spatial matters and landscape – Monumento and Berlin are two further examples of his extensive body of work. (Artist website)
