Recognised as a pioneer of Kinetic Art, Horacio Garcia Rossi created with a keen on the concept of ‘colour-light’ and exploring the relationships between light and motion within the realms of art. Rossi’s earliest outputs were heavily centred around the use of black and white on a two-dimensional plain, but he later went on to create a series of light installations including Unstable Light Boxes and Rotating Cylinders – the latter was an interactive piece that could manually be moved by his audience. Rossi was a co-founder of GRAV (Groupe de Recherche d’Art Visuel) and worked alongside fellow members such as Francisco Sabrino and Julio Le Parc – the groups’ Light and Movement exhibition of 1967 is considered as a key moment in the emergence of Kinetic Art. What is kinetic art?

Kinetic art is an international movement that emerged in the 1920s and gained prominence in the 1960s, referring to art that involves both apparent and real motion. It encompasses any medium that includes movement, either relying on actual motion for its effect or being perceived as moving by the viewer. Early examples include canvas paintings designed to create optical illusions of movement.
