Paul Van Hoeydonck
Paul Van Hoeydonck (Belgium, 1925–2025) was a multidisciplinary artist best known for his sculpture Fallen Astronaut, which was placed on the Moon during the Apollo 15 mission. His diverse body of work spanned painting, drawing, and sculpture, often exploring themes of space, technology, and human ambition in the cosmos.

Paul Van Hoeydonck was a major figure in artistic development between 1955 and 1965, and the creator of the only piece of art to have a permanent place on the moon. Fallen Astronaut, a 3.5-inch aluminium sculpture, was designed as a tribute to astronauts who lost their lives in the pursuit of space exploration. The figure was secretly placed on the moon by astronaut David Scott, alongside a plaque bearing the names of fourteen fallen astronauts.
Van Hoeydonck was associated with the influential Zero group and maintained friendships with prominent artists such as Lucio Fontana and Heinz Mack. His artistic output spanned several styles: his early works included monochromatic collages, followed by vivid oil paintings characterised by dynamic, vibrating colour schemes. (Artist website)
