Penone Giuseppe

Renowned for his analysis of the relationship between man and the natural world, Penone Guiseppe is a sculptor whose early work is often associated with the Arte Povera movement. Guiseppe’s earliest works made use of unconventional materials such as wood, stone, clay and soil and were often site-specific; many of his earliest works were situated in the woodland local to his hometown of Piedmont- this series of work was titled Alpi Marittime. Thoughts of Leaves is also notable among the works that exemplify his interest in nature and our place alongside it; this piece draws comparisons between the traces left by the hands of the artist and the weathering and erosion of plants and minerals by the natural elements.
