Screen print with quartz sand (terragraphy) in black on cardboard. Hand-signed, dated, artist's proof.
A dense field of black ink and quartz sand dominates the upper two-thirds of this large-format terragraphy, its surface rippled with visible granular texture that transforms the print into a tactile, almost geological object. Below, vertical drip columns descend into a zone of raw, spattered marks on exposed cardboard — the visceral energy of Nitsch's Orgien Mysterien Theater distilled into the printed surface. Hand-signed and dated, this artist's proof exemplifies the Viennese Actionist's lifelong investigation of materiality, ritual, and sensation.

Hermann Nitsch (Austria, 1938–2022) was a pivotal figure in Viennese Actionism, renowned for his provocative performances that integrated painting, music, and ritualistic elements. His 'Orgien Mysterien Theater' challenged artistic boundaries, employing visceral materials like blood and animal entrails to evoke intense sensory experiences. Nitsch's work continues to influence contemporary performance art.

What is Performance Art?

What is Performance Art?

Performance Art is a genre of fine art that is traditionally interdisciplinary, involving various art forms. It can be scripted or unscripted, random or carefully orchestrated, spontaneous, or meticulously planned, with or without audience participation. Performance Art can be presented live or through media, with the artist either present or absent. It typically involves four basic elements: space, the performer’s body or presence through a medium, time, and the relationship between performer and audience. The artwork consists of actions performed by an individual or group in a specific time and space.
