Nam June Paik

The artist Paik Nam June was born in what is now South Korea during the early 1930's. He would go to live in the USA mainly to pursue his artistic career. It is Paik that is often referred to as the main creator or founder of video art. In actual fact he was capable of using several differing types of art, and was noted for his willingness of using new technology to develop new forms of art. Paik Nam Junes innovative use of technology therefore led to the creation of video art as it became known as. Aside from been an artist Paik was a classically trained musician, both his degrees were in music, gained respectively in Tokyo and Munich. Advances in TV, audio, and video equipment allowed him to make artistic videos to go with the music he composed himself. By the mid 1960's he was already known as the leading exponent of making musical videos. One of his best known works is "One candle, candle projection." There have been regular exhibitions of his work since his death in 2006.
