'Grapes In The City' by Yayoi Kusama is a screen-print from 1989, measuring 53.5 × 61 cm and from a hand-numbered edition. Against a flat crimson ground, an oversized bunch of grapes fills the upper two-thirds of the composition, each berry rendered with Kusama's signature concentric dot patterning in purples, pinks, reds and whites. Broad, veined leaves in dark green frame the cluster above. Below, a white silhouette skyline — church steeple, clock tower, low-rise blocks — runs the full width of the sheet, a lone pedestrian figure visible at street level. The scale inversion, a monumental fruit looming over a miniature city, is characteristic of Kusama's recurring use of organic forms to overwhelm architectural and social order, consistent with her stated ambition to reshape society through art. The work sits within her printmaking output of the late 1980s, when she was re-establishing her international profile after years based in Tokyo.
